PUG: Exploring NFL Data with nflscrapR

  • Carnegie Mellon University - Doherty Hall A302 4909 Frew St Pittsburgh, PA 15213 United States (map)

We are thrilled to have Ron Yurko (http://www.stat.cmu.edu/~ryurko/) talk about his package, nflscrapR. Ron is a PhD Student in Statistics and Data Science at Carnegie Mellon and an author of the R packages: fcscrapR, nflWAR, and nflscrapR. Hope to see you there!

Abstract: The current state of football analytics is heavily based on proprietary and potentially biased subjective data. Using the ‘nflscrapR’ package in R, I will demonstrate the type of reproducible research one can conduct with publicly available NFL data. Key concepts in football analytics research will be covered such as a comparison of the value of rushing and passing plays with expected points, as well as analyzing the most impactful plays with win probability.
